Canon EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II
Both cameras come with a new "Accelerated Capture" imaging platform consisting of the new DIGIC Accelerator processor along with the high-performance DIGIC X image processor and newly developed high-speed image sensors that are included in both new models. The DIGIC Accelerator processor is now complemented by support for big data processing along with Deep Learning technologies. This combination unlocks increased performance and new features in several areas including autofocus, continuous shooting and image quality.
Dual Pixel CMOS - Dual Pixel Intelligent AF
With this new imaging platform, the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II feature the latest version of Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology - Dual Pixel Intelligent AF. This includes several improvements including the ability to track subjects more accurately by identifying the face and upper body of players and avoiding obstacles or other players. This is further enhanced by the ability for users to register specific faces and consistently track and prioritize them over other players. The newly added "Action Priority" mode automatically identifies common action poses in basketball, soccer and volleyball, identifies and tracks the main subject in fast-paced and dynamic situations, and captures the main action moment. Eye-control autofocus is offered for the first time on the EOS R5 Mark II and is improved to twice the level of the EOS R3 on both models, including a higher pixel count sensor, improved LEDs, a larger eye detection area and an updated detection algorithm that provides a better way to select a subject to track in a complex scene.
Sensor
The EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II offer new high-speed image sensors, resulting in faster shooting and faster sensor readout, with the EOS R1 seeing a 40% increase in shutter speed over the EOS R3 - putting it on par with the mechanical shutter on the EOS-1D X Mark III. With a similar 60% increase on the EOS R5 Mark II, both models are able to capture the action without any reduction in image quality or dynamic range. The cameras are now equipped with a pre-shoot function that offers the ability to capture up to 20 frames (on the EOS R1) and 15 frames (on the EOS R5 Mark II) in HEIF/JPEG or RAW format at any frame rate before pressing the shutter, allowing a key moment to be captured even if it is missed. Both cameras feature large viewfinders with high brightness and dropout-free resolution, with the EOS R1 having the highest resolution at 9.44 million dots and the EOS R5 Mark II offering twice the brightness of the EOS R5.
Deep Learning
Thanks to the new imaging platform, the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II benefit from improved image quality with Deep Learning for in-camera resolution and noise reduction, providing four times the resolution or noise reduction in-camera when using JPEG or HEIF formats. Users can also crop and scale up directly in-camera, making it much easier to send photos without the need for editing through separate apps. Both cameras feature powerful image stabilization (up to 8.5 f-stops) with the ability to shoot effectively, especially in low light or other difficult conditions.
Video shooting
For videographers, the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II offer 12-bit RAW video recording internally to a memory card, as well as the use of Cinema EOS Movie Recording formats along with Canon Log 2 and 3 with proxy video recording, which is now fully supported between two cards, and four-channel audio. This takes professional video production to a new level, delivering superior quality and creative flexibility. The cameras are also capable of simultaneously recording high-resolution still images and Full HD video with the option of external recording via HDMI Type A ports on both models.
To support professionals' workflows, several features provide fast and stable connectivity and fail-safe options, with multiple paths to image/video destination stations for reporting with support for C2PA2 content verification format or for checking first takes of film. Standard file naming, separate folders for photos/videos and advanced tagging in the News ML-G2 standard are also supported. Both cameras support Wi-Fi6E/11ax 6GHz in-body, making them the first EOS series cameras to offer a new level of transfer speed, with the EOS R1 additionally supporting 2.5Gbps Ethernet connectivity and FTP in-body- The EOS R5 Mark II provides 2.5Gbps Ethernet via an optional grip.
Canon EOS R1, Canon's new flagship camera
Designed for elite sports photographers, the EOS R1 is designed to never miss a shot in the fast-paced world of sports and news photography. Autofocus, along with speed, is the key to achieving previously unattainable results. The EOS R1 is uniquely equipped with a groundbreaking new cross-type autofocus system, meaning it excels in challenging conditions such as shooting over a tennis net, picking out smaller subjects and locking in vertical detail in situations where there is a lack of horizontal detail in the subject below the autofocus area. This technology requires an entirely new Dual Pixel CMOS AF sensor arrangement,.
The camera offers a stunningly quiet electronic shutter speed of 40 frames per second with autofocus tracking and 20 frames of pre-shooting, meaning users can track a scene without losing image quality. Its 24.2-megapixel resolution provides exceptional high-speed performance while reaching up to 96 megapixels in-camera with Deep Learning and image resolution enhancement and noise reduction. Enhanced flash sync speeds of up to 1/400 second and improved white balance and image exposure evaluation means greater consistency and versatility for a variety of genres.
The EOS R1 is also a master of hybrid multimedia with 6K at 60fps or 4K at 120fps along with Full HD at 240fps.
Designed to withstand the harshest conditions, the EOS R1 has a newly designed weatherproof body. With a high-resolution electronic viewfinder and anti-fog design, and a wide viewfinder eyepiece, it is a comfortable camera for long-term sports photography. A new feature is the two-stage AF-ON button, which allows instant activation of two programmable functions within a single button, allowing photographers to react quickly to the changing action in front of them.
