The new Leica DG Vario-Summilux 25-50 mm / F1.7 Asph (H-X2550) is a perfect pair with the Leica DG Vario-Summilux 10-25 mm / F1.7 Asph (H-X1025), which has earned a great reputation among users. These two lenses cover the focusing distance from wide angle to telephoto, replacing seven fixed focal length lenses (20mm / 24mm / 28mm / 35mm / 50mm / 85mm / 100mm, 35mm eq.), while offering the same or even higher descriptive performance compared to fixed focal length lenses. Both have a superb f/1.7 aperture throughout the range, and have beautiful bokeh with rich transitions and image character. Both share the same aperture shape and handling, making it easy to create a unique original image product using only these two lenses.
The lens system consists of 16 elements in 11 groups, including an aspherical lens and three ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) lenses that effectively suppress axial chromatic aberration and magnification chromatic aberration. Spherical aberration and distortion are also corrected by aspherical lenses to achieve high resolution. Thanks to the use of aspherical lenses and optimal design, the lens has a compact size and light weight combined with high optical performance.
Compatible with very fast shooting speeds of up to 240 fps, it enables high-speed and high-precision autofocusing. The new lens particularly excels in video recording performance. In addition to the silent operation achieved by the internal focus drive system, the smooth aperture ring and micro-rock motor system in the aperture control section helps the instrument smoothly catch up with brightness changes when zooming or panning. The optical design achieves exceptional barycentric stability to minimize image shift when zooming. The focus ring features a manually operated FC (Focus Clutch) mechanism, ensuring intuitive and precise focusing. The lens can also be switched between linear and non-linear modes. The Leica DG Vario-Summilux 25-50 mm / F1.7 ASPH also excels in the field of video recording thanks to a mechanism that suppresses the change in angle of view when changing focus (focus breathing) throughout the zoom range.
The Leica DG Vario-Summilux 25-50 mm / F1.7 Asph lens boasts a minimum focusing distance of 0.28 m (wide-angle setting, 0.31 m telephoto setting) and a maximum magnification ratio of 0.42x (35mm equivalent), and is therefore very suitable for macro work. The rugged dust/splashproof construction can withstand operation in harsh conditions even in 10 degrees below zero, so the lens also offers high mobility. The filter diameter is 77 mm.
