The new Panasonic LUMIX S1 and S1R models are designed for professional photographers and videographers. Both devices are equipped with Full Frame MOS sensors with 24.2 MP (S1) and 47.3 MP (S1R) resolution, respectively, as well as a new, alliance-grade L-mount with a wide diameter. Other standout features include a superb dual stabilizer -- the most powerful in its class -- and a new type of image processor, the Venus Engine, which allows owners to enjoy superior sharpness in both highlights and shadows. LUMIX S models thus meet the highest professional standards in both still photography and video recording. For fast action scenes, the OLED viewfinder comes in handy with a 0.005-second response time and, at the time of launch, the world's highest resolution (5.76 megapixels)!
High resolution and great sensitivity
The combination of a full-frame sensor and the outstanding Venus Engine image processor allows you to shoot and record at extremely high sensitivities (up to ISO 204800 on the S1 and 51200 on the S1R) without significant degradation from noise
If the photographer wants to make the most of the resolution, they can now switch to High Resolution Mode, which produces images with stunning detail at 96 MP (S1) and 187 MP (S1R) respectively. In this case, the resulting photo consists of eight source shots taken in rapid succession, with the sensor always shifting slightly between them. The result is a RAW image of 12,000 x 8,000 and 16,736 x 11,168 pixels respectively. In high resolution mode, motion blur can even be suppressed if you need to capture subjects in motion
Efficient Dual I.S. 2 optical stabilizer
The five-axis optical stabilizer in the new camera body effectively compensates for camera shake and allows handheld shooting with a shooting time 5.5 EV longer than without stabilization. Combined with the Dual Axis Optical Stabilizer in the LUMIX S Series lenses, the Dual I.S. 2 system produces up to 6 EV efficiency for both still photography and video recording. The stabiliser uses sophisticated technology: not only the gyroscope sensor, but also the sensor and accelerometer itself take care of measuring and evaluating vibrations. If photographers want to detect and eliminate the source or cause of shake, they can use the special I.S. Status Scope mode, which displays the degree of shake in graphical form on the display, making it easier to detect its origin
Fast and accurate focusing
When the proven contrast matching method, unique DFD technology and the lightning-fast performance of the image processor are combined, the result is an extremely fast and precise focusing system. To ensure that users can rely on it in any situation, the Venus Engine image processor, sensor and new LUMIX S lenses communicate at up to 480 rpm, allowing the system to respond in just 0.08 seconds
Focusing is further enhanced by the smart predictive Advanced Artificial Intelligence Technology, which is able to recognise people, cats, dogs and birds. By identifying the subject, the system can better predict its movements and adjust focusing accordingly. The face, eye and pupil recognition system helps to better focus portraits
When shooting subjects in fast motion, the LUMIX S1/S1R can shoot sequentially at up to 9 fps in single focus or 6 fps in continuous focus. In 6K Photo mode, video windows shot at 30 fps at 18 megapixels can be used as single JPG images, and in 4K Photo mode, up to 60 fps at 8 MP. All this even 1 second before you can press the shutter
Highest resolution viewfinder and top display
The new LUMIX S1 features the world's highest resolution OLED viewfinder -- 5.76 megapixels. The viewfinder image has a refresh rate of up to 120 fps and virtually zero display lag (just 0.005 seconds), allowing for realistic motion distortion. The high resolution with a 10000:1 contrast ratio makes the image true to life and full of detail. The display ratio can be set to 0.78x, 0.74x or 0.7x
The 8.2 cm diagonal touch screen has a resolution of 2.1 MP. It is mounted on a three-axis joint so it can be tilted and swivelled for shooting or shooting in landscape and portrait mode. When shooting or filming in twilight or game in the dark, it comes in handy with a special "red" Night Mode, a brightened display image for shooting e.g. night skies (Live View Boost) and backlit buttons for easier orientation in the dark. On the top is a backlit status display, the largest in its class. It displays basic photographic parameters and information. Battery and memory card information is displayed continuously even when the unit is switched off
Professional features for videographers
For cinematographers, the LUMIX S1 offers exceptional image quality and a range of tools that first-time users in this class will be able to take full control of their work. 4K footage can be shot at 60/50p, while 30p/25p makes use of the full sensor area. This not only ensures that the footage is exceptionally clear and rich in detail, but also that the effective angle of view of the lenses used does not change and the user can take full advantage of the low depth of field if they wish
The device supports a variety of different gamma curves, including the professional standards Cinelike D/V or Like709. If the user wants to save processing time, they can take advantage of the new lower contrast and colour saturation mode, which offers versatile use. The new Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) profile enables shooting with a wider dynamic range and saturated colors (Like2100)
The LUMIX S1 enables 4K video recording at 60/50p in 4:2:0 8-bit standard directly to SD or XQD cards. 4:2:2 colour sampling can be used when connected via standard HDMI. In 2019, users will be provided with a software key to unlock the ability to shoot 4K 60/50p 4:2:2 10-bit via HDMI output and 30p/25p/24p in 4:2:2 10-bit internally as well. After this software update, it will also be possible to use the V Log standard with professional dynamic range in the camera. Time limitations apply for 4K/60p recording and High Speed Video, while 4K/30p and Full HD can be recorded without limitations. High Speed Video allows 2x slow motion at 60 sn/s in 4K, or up to 6x slow motion in Full HD at up to 180 sn/s
There is also a 3.5mm microphone input as well as a 3.5mm headphone output. If required, audio can be enhanced using the DMW-XLR1 microphone adapter in the external flash socket. Professional microphones and other sources with XLR connectors can be connected to it. The full-size HDMI connector can be securely attached to the body of the unit using the included adapter, preventing accidental cable pull or damage to the connector
Meets the requirements of professionals
Panasonic LUMIX S models are designed for professionals, hence the rugged construction with front and rear chassis made of magnesium alloy, or protective elements on all joints and controls. The instruments are dust and moisture resistant and operate in freezing temperatures down to -10°C. The shutter is designed to last 400,000 cycles. It allows you to set the exposure time up to 1/8000 sec, which is plenty for very fast movement. The extremely short flash sync time of 1/320 s is also a great advantage
The layout of the controls is based on an ergonomic study -- it is designed so that the user can concentrate solely on shooting or filming. The eight-way joystick and the improved user interface also make work faster and easier. The lock lever prevents unwanted actions (the user can specify which functions to deactivate when using it). Photographers can protect their copyrights by, among other things, automatically inserting author and copyright information in the metadata of each image (Exif). Two slots for SD (UHS-II) and XQD memory cards are available, and compatibility with the CFexpress format is expected in the near future
Creative possibilities
The cameras offer a range of options to influence the look of your images. A rich menu of image profiles is available, but that's not all -- other profiles can be created and saved by the user. If the user is more into computer editing, the Flat style can be used, with a flat curve, low contrast and colour saturation, ideal for post-production
New photo styles include HLG Photo (Hybrid Log Gamma) modes with enhanced dynamic range. Images created in these modes can be displayed on the screens of Panasonic's new 4K resolution HLG-enabled TVs (when connected via HDMI cable) or other compatible devices. Photos taken in HLG mode can be saved in 8K resolution in HSP format, but also in conventional JPG format or as a RAW file
When shooting portraits, the new AWBw preset white balance option with a slight reddish tint comes in handy. The new Highlight Weighted Light mode preserves details in the brightest areas of the image and prevents burnout. New panoramic aspect ratios of 65:24 (Film Panorama) and 2:1 also expand creative possibilities
Connectivity and remote control
LUMIX S models support the LUMIX Tether software system, which allows the camera to be controlled remotely from a computer via USB. In addition, live streaming and transferring photos to a PC while shooting is available. There is also a new LUMIX Sync app for mobile devices with iOS or Android operating systems. With it, the camera can be controlled directly from a phone or tablet and photos can also be copied instantly from the camera to a connected device
Thanks to Bluetooth 4.2 support, the camera can be connected to a mobile device permanently with minimal power consumption. You can also transfer the current photo settings from one LUMIX S model to another via Bluetooth. Other highlights include Wi-Fi in both 5 GHz (IEEE802.11ac) and 2.4 GHz (IEEE802.11b/g/n), which ensures fast and secure connections to mobile devices
A wide range of accessories
LUMIX S models are compatible with a wide variety of accessories. These include the DMW-RS2 remote shutter release, DMW-EC6 eyepiece, DMW-BGS1 battery grip and DMW-BTC14 charger. The charger supports a USB charging system and will recharge a 7.4 V battery with a capacity of 3,050 mAh in about 2 hours. The camera can be used normally while charging. External flashes DMW-FL580L / FL360L / FL200L can also be used
