A great advantage of the Sony ECM-680S directional microphone is the ability to select stereo/mono mode by simply flipping a switch directly on the microphone body. Mono mode offers an uncompromising directional characteristic suitable for clear and intelligible recording of dialogue or spoken word in almost any conditions. In stereo mode, the microphone's directional characteristic extends to the professionally established MS ("Mid-side") stereo system. This system incorporates two separate microphone diaphragms with a separate output in a single 5-pin XLR connector. Each of the diaphragms requires a separate +48V phantom power supply. If the camera or audio recorder being used does not have a 5-pin XLR input, Y-reduction (5-pin XLR to 2x 3-pin XLR) must be used to create two separate XLR connections (separate L-left, R-right) to achieve a comprehensive stereo image

The Sony ECM-680S stereo/mono directional microphone is very sensitive to the adverse effects of wind. For this reason, a "windshield" is included in the package (foam windshield). For unwanted disturbances in the lower frequencies (electrical appliances, traffic, wind), the microphone is also supplemented with a "Low-cut" low-pass filter. For more challenging wind conditions, we recommend additional wind protection, e.g. Azden SWS-200
