The Sony PXW-FS5 II is a Super35 handheld camera with breathtaking 4K HDR and the ability to record up to 120 frames per second in FullHD or 240 frames in FullHD or 2K. Shoot stunning HDR images with HLG and S-log2/3 capabilities.INCLUDES RAW+HFR LICENSE.
High Frame Rate (HFR) recording
FS5 II delivers stunning slow motion imagery, including four seconds of 120fps in 4K, continuous 240fps in 2K RAW when used in partnership with a compatible third-party external recorder, such as the ATOMOS Shogun and Convergent Design® Odyssey 7Q
FS5 II also offers High Frame Rate (HFR) cache recording at Full HD 10bit 4:2:2 image quality and a frame rate of up to 240 fps. 8-second cache recording on to SDXC card means no more mistimed shots leading to extra takes. It also lets you pick out footage at exactly the point that you want. FS5 II also records continuous 120fps internally in Full HD. Higher frame rates of 480 fps and 960 fps are possible at specific resolutions.
Resolution | Frame rate | Internal / Output | Continuous / Burst |
---|---|---|---|
4K (4096 x 2160) | 60 / 50 fps | Output FS RAW | Continuous |
4K (4096 x 2160) | 120 / 100 fps | Output FS RAW | Burst four seconds |
2K (2048 x 1080) | 240 / 200 / 120 / 100 fps | Output FS RAW | Continuous |
Full HD (1960 x 1080) | 120 / 100 fps | Internal recording XAVC HD 422 10 bit | Continuous, or burst sixteen seconds |
Full HD (1960 x 1080) | 240 / 200 fps | Internal recording XAVC HD 422 10 bit | Burst eight seconds |
Spectacular HDR performance
Demand for HDR content is increasing and FS5 II offers you a choice of two powerful workflows. Whichever option you choose, a phenomenal fourteen stops of exposure latitude ensures the highest fidelity in capturing highlights and details within shadows.
4K Super 35 Exmor(TM) sensor
FS5 II is built around a high-sensitivity 4K Super35 'Exmor' CMOS Sensor that offers all the benefits of a large format sensor in combination with the exceptional image readout speeds required for 4K motion-picture shooting and super slow motion.
4K resolution: 11.6 million total pixels and 8.8 million* effective pixels deliver 4K resolution. Even if you're delivering in HD, your recordings will capture detail and image texture that HD sensors simply cannot see.
The Super 35 size sensor offers 'bokeh,' the defocussed backgrounds made possible by shallow depth of field, as well as excellent low-light sensitivity and an expansive field of view.
14 stops of exposure latitude deliver powerful grayscale rendition without crushing shadow detail or blowing out highlight detail.
Sony's Exmor CMOS design provides high-speed full-pixel read-out capability (without pixel binning) and sophisticated camera processing to ensure jaggies and moiré are minimised.
Record 10bit 4:2:2 in Full HD at up 50Mbps internally.
Record 4K at 60**/50 fps in FS-RAW via a compatible third-party external recorder, such as ATOMOS Shogun and Convergent Design® Odyssey 7Q.

? mount flexibility
Sony's ? mount system offers unsurpassed compatibility with both Sony and third-party lenses. FS5 II's E-Mount can take cinema lenses and SLR lenses with a third-party adapter, as well as Sony's E-mount and A-mount lenses. So whether buying new lenses, or making use of lenses you've already purchased, the FS5 II makes it easy.
You can also purchase the FS5II on its own (PXW-FS5M2) or with the SELP18105G lens (PXW-FS5M2K).
Ergonomic body
The PXW-FS5 has a highly ergonomic body; its low weight (0.8 kg) and perfect balance make the camera suitable for all-day work or special applications such as aerial drone filming. A set of controls on the swivel handle ensures maximum ease of use: all the key buttons are always within reach! Sony has also heeded users' cries for a more flexible display - the 3.5" LCD panel can be attached to different points on the camera to adapt the device to the current shooting needs
Wide dynamic range
At the heart of the camera is Sony's high-end Super35 Exmor CMOS sensor, with a resolution of 11.6 megapixels (8.3 effective) and a dynamic range of 14 apertures (S-Log2/S-Log3). The high sensitivity and large sensor area provide excellent image characteristics: nice blurred backgrounds, smooth shooting in low light conditions, lower noise and overall very high image quality. The FS5's electronics also offer high frame rate recording (up to 240 fps at eight-second intervals) in HD resolution, 10-bit quality and 4:2:2 sampling. This allows footage to be recorded at up to 10x slow motion without loss of image quality
Electronic ND filter
The PXW-FS5 holds the number one position in the field of Super 35 sensor cameras by integrating an electronic variable ND filter. The filter expands the creative possibilities for filmmakers to work with the depth of field and exposure parameters of the camera, allowing them to achieve a cinematic look despite the camera's overall diminutive size. Recording at resolutions up to 4K is done using the XAVC codec, with a firmware update for recording RAW data planned for the future
Interchangeable lenses
For easy mounting of lenses from Sony and other manufacturers, the camera is equipped with the Alpha Mount System bayonet. The E-mount bayonet supports virtually all lens types (e.g. SLR glass using adapters), including Sony's E-mount and A-mount standard models. In the PXW-FS5K kit, the camera body is supplied with the PZ 18-105mm F4 G OSS compact zoom lens (SELP18105G) with Sony E-mount, which allows one-handed zooming. The camera is equipped with 3G-SDI and HDMI interfaces as well as a pair of SD card slots. There are also Wi-Fi and LAN network terminals for wireless data transfer or video streaming.
Key features of the PXW-FS5
Compact and lightweight body
The miniature size and light weight, along with perfect balance, ensure comfortable all-day operation and perfect integration with a camera stabilizer or drone. The rotating handle allows quick configuration of the camera for shooting at ground or eye level. The multi-functional grip also brings together all the important controls for easy one-handed shooting. The flexibility of the camera is further emphasized by the removable LCD panel that can be placed in different places on the body..
Creative features
The camera is equipped with an 11.6MP Super35 Exmor CMOS sensor for recording 4K video with high image quality, in XAVC Long GOP format (up to 100 Mbps at 3840x2160 or 1920x1080 resolution with 60p frame rate and 50 Mbps bitrate). It is the first camera with a Super 35 size image sensor to integrate an electronic variable ND filter with a linear waveform from 1/4 ND - 1/128 ND. Slow-motion movies with a ratio of up to 1/10 can be shot in Super Slow Motion mode, which records 10-bit 4:2:2 Full HD video at up to 240 fps without cropping sensor image data or reducing image quality. Thanks to the large size and high sensitivity of the sensor, it can be operated even in low light conditions. The sensor also boasts 14 aperture numbers of dynamic range for great definition in both dark and light parts of the frame
Network functions
The camera features 3G-SDI and 4K HDMI interfaces, an MI socket, two SD card slots, as well as Wi-Fi and LAN terminals for advanced networking features. Of course, there are also other high-end Sony camera features, including Clear Image Zoom digital zoom.
