The lens features an optical design with 25 elements in 16 groups, including one XLD, five LD and two hybrid aspherical elements. Focusing is provided by a VXD motor, which is suitable for both photography and video. There are BBAR-G2 coatings on the lenses to suppress flare, and the front member has a fluorine coating for water and grease protection.
