The 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 lens is a fast standard telephoto zoom lens developed for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras in its second generation. Its most striking feature is its high image quality with a consistently high F/2.8 aperture, as well as its practical housing. With a length of just 157 mm and a weight of 855 g, it is the lightest and most compact lens in its class. Several special optical glasses ensure excellent image performance from the centre to the edges of the frame. The lens features the VXD linear focusing mechanism, which offers excellent quietness and fast response, and the patented VC image stabilization mechanism, which provides versatile options for all shooting scenarios. The minimum focusing distance of 0.30 m opens up new possibilities for the user to express himself photographically. The connector port for this lens offers the TAMRON Lens Utility's new "Focus Limiter" function. With this lightweight telephoto zoom lens, you can get close to your subject in every situation - and reward yourself with the perfect shot!
Di III - Mirrorless systems
These lenses are designed exclusively for mirrorless cameras (aka mirrorless cameras) and cannot be used with digital SLR cameras.
VXD
VXD autofocus is a world premiere: It is the first linear focusing motor developed by Tamron for superior autofocusing. The two VXD modules, which operate in a floating system and are controlled by electronic pulses, ensure fast and accurate focusing on both near and distant subjects. The new motor also guarantees improved AF tracking, for example when shooting sports. The autofocus works so quietly that you can shoot even in situations that require complete peace and quiet.
Special XLD optical elements
Similar to LD, prevents chromatic aberration and other defects. XLD, however, is a much more sophisticated system that is mostly used in telephoto lenses.
Special LD optical elements
Colour defect is a common defect in optics, manifesting itself in many ways. We often talk about so-called chromatic aberration, which is more common in wide-angle lenses. LD elements are made of special optical glasses with extremely low light scattering, which effectively compensate for the colour defect, especially noticeable when using telephoto lenses in the extreme position.
MR - Splash protection
Tamron lenses have a weatherproof housing that optimally protects the sensitive interior from wind and weather. The robust outer shell is effectively sealed against moisture ingress at all critical points (e.g. between the focus ring and the bayonet connection). This ensures reliable operation even in the most adverse outdoor shooting conditions.
IF - Internal Focusing
With lenses with internal focusing, the length of the lens does not change during focusing and the filter ring does not rotate with it. This makes it easier to handle, especially with longer telephoto lenses, as well as shooting with polarizing and graduated filters. Other advantages include a shorter focusing distance over the entire focus area and less light loss at the corners of the image (vignetting) and less focus-related aberrations.
BBAR / BBAR G2
The BBAR coating prevents reflection and scattering of light incident on the lens surface. You avoid loss of brightness and contrast and prevent "ghosting". The BBAR coating also contributes to natural colour rendering. Since 2019, the advanced BBAR G2 coating has been used.
FLR coating
Fluoride coating permanently protects the front lens from contamination. Oil and water droplets do not adhere to the surface, which is therefore very easy to clean.
VC - Image Stabilization
This mechanism helps to maintain a sharp image when shooting without a tripod or in low light conditions.
ZL - Zoom lock
ZOOM LOCK (zoom lock) allows you to lock at any focal point.
G2 Second Generation
A new generation of lenses with improved performance, faster focusing, better image stabilization and a higher quality finish.
