The SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2 is a new telephoto lens for full-frame digital SLR cameras.

The model was developed to extend the functions of its predecessor. The new generation SP 70-200mm lens has undergone a thorough revision of the optical, mechanical and electronic designs to increase AF speed and accuracy, enhance the Vibration Compensation (VC) image stabilization function and shorten the minimum focusing distance. New features include eBand coating, moisture and dust resistant construction, fluorine coating and teleconverter compatibility. The lens design features a metal tube for improved handling and ease of use. The result of this dramatic development is this model - a high-speed telephoto lens that increases the range of expression for shooting in a wide range of genres such as portraits, landscapes, sports and photojournalism.

The optical design has been redesigned and improved. Both resolution and contrast rendering have been significantly improved beyond current levels. Bokeh has been improved and expanded to provide superior background effects throughout the zoom range. The use of a 9-blade ring further enhances the bokeh. The optical design of the new consists of 23 elements in 17 groups. The optimum placement of XLD extra-low dispersion elements and LD low light dispersion elements thoroughly eliminates chromatic aberrations that tend to occur especially with high-speed telephoto lenses throughout the zoom range. The new telephoto lens is also fully compatible with the 1.4x*2 and 2.0x*2 teleconverters, which increase the focal length of the lens to 1.4 and 2.0 times its original values.
