Thepopular Particle Illusion software for creating particle effects, currently reborn as a plug-in of the Boris Continuumsuite, is now also offered as a free standalone application for Windows and macOS! Although it doesn't include the same toolset as the paid plug-in (e.g. Mocha motion tracking technology; full feature comparison here), it offers unlimited emitter, particle, force field and deflector counts, hardware acceleration, rendering up to 8K resolution, ProRes support and over 2500 templates.
